Hostel Games — Part 3

15th February 2009

It’s the Amazing Race.

We must go to as many posts as we can (there were 11 in total) with some criteria. There goes it:

1. We got 20 rubber bands as a start. Each time we go for a game, we must bet a minimum of 2 rubber bands. If we win, we got the number of rubber bands we bet, but if we lost, we lost it. Simple enough to be said. The group with the most number of rubber band would have a big advantage.
2. We were given 4 snapshots. Along the way, we should try to find the snapshots.
3. We were about to solve a puzzle. If we managed to pass a post, we would be given a clue about this puzzle. There were up to 11 clues (as there were 11 posts).
4. We were given an egg which we should keep in our journey in this Amazing Race.

8 AM: we go!

As Cumi, Albert, and the others thought that starting from Chinatown was the most efficient way, we went there first.

And we found that our target was an empty place. What the?

It turned out that our map deceived us. Hell! Waste of time. What’s more, we failed in this first post. Luckily we only bet 2 rubber bands, so we only lost 2. Without wasting any more time, we went to the second post: Budi’s post.

This post is a passing message through acting post. Budi warned us that this was hard, so we bet only 2 rubber bands. We did it actually. So we got 2 rubber bands back.

We continued our journey to the third post: Linh’s. Eating bananas post. What? Okay, so someone, blindfolded, must bring banana with his leg hand, walking along obstacles, to the eater (who was also blindfolded). As this sounded easy, we bet 5. We did it.

Next… we went to a post where the most generous committee waited: Mr. Teja Bond’s post.

His trial was an easy one: taking a picture of a building and estimating the height of another building. The picture-taking was done by Albert and Michael. The height estimating was done by me with a little bit trigonometrical touch.

Since we bet 28 in this post, we got 28. Wow!

Next we headed to the Esplanade. Accidentally, we found another post in our way: Justin’s post. After waiting for the Yesman to finish their task, we did this trial: moving a long strip of toilet paper with straw without falling to the ground. Everyone must close their eyes, suck the straw in order to maintain the toilet paper, and one friend would lead the way.

Thanks to Rosa’s effort as the leader and everyone’s effort to maintain the toilet paper, we managed to do this. We bet 20 so we got 20.

Next post is…

Stacey’s. But his post was not mentioned in our guide! Could he be a dummy? Well, but he told us he was a special post. So we just go with him.

Our task was to boil our egg with a candle in 25 minutes. If it was boiled, we pass, but if it didn’t we failed. Simple to be said. So we try to boil the egg and while waiting, we hunted for another post.

We went to Ray’s. His trial was an easy one. Since we bet 50, we got 50. Wow! And since we managed to answer the quiz from him, we got another 5. Beautiful!

But then, misery befell us consecutively. Why?

Our egg-boiling attempt was failed. Not only we lost 18 rubber bands, but also we lost the egg, which we MUST guard. Hell.

So, we aimed for the next post: Nichy’s post.

We had to threw water balloon with bedsheet from a distance, and must be caught by another bedsheet without popped. We had tried a trial, and we did it well. But?

When it was real, we failed.

Oh, no. So we lost another 20 rubber bands. We were left with 90 with us.

As we estimated there would be no time left for another post, we decided to go back to Hostel. In our way, we tried to figure out the puzzle and answered as many questions as we could. As we arrived in the hostel, the time showed 2.59 PM. We were almost late!!

But luck was on our side. We were right in time before late. We submitted our booklet, photos, and we told that we boiled our egg (…damn).

And we took a rest until 6 PM. At 6 PM there will be a formaldehyde formal dinner.

Closing event: Formal Dinner

We are required to wear formal attire, so I decided to wear blue jeans and my green shirt. The food was great, but I really didn’t like Rattatouille (no offense to Remmy!) because it really didn’t suit my tongue. The rest such as lamb chop and mashed potato really appeased me.

And then… the Hostel Games result announcement!

I expected that we would get the bottom 3 (as we really performed bad) so I wasn’t really eager upon hearing the result.

Coming the 10th was Shrek, followed by The Cullens and Fuzzy Wuzzy (CMIIW, I really forgot). So at least we were not the bottom 3. I became quite eager to hear the next.

The next two were I-Cha-Mander and Yesman (again, CMIIW). Wow, 00T was at top 50%! Even this made me quite proud.

The next was… Cicakman. We became even more interested as we were already on the top 4 position. The 4th position was us. Okay, quite an achievement! Congratulations to Joker, Garda, and Pink Patrix who consecutively got the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd position.

Also, in this formal dinner, we celebrate the birthday of those who are born from 1st January to 15th February. Special happy birthday for Thea who was having her birthday today!

So that’s the end of the Formal Dinner, and subsequently, Hostel Games. Back to real life!
